Tourism is one of the most important sectors of the Egyptian economy. In 2008, Egypt was visited
by 12.8 million tourists who contributed to the treasury of eleven billion dollars. The sector
employs about 12% of Egyptian workers
The main tourist attractions are thousands of years old monuments for which Egypt is world famous destinations. The main of them are the Pyramids and Great Sphinx of Giza, the temple of Abu Simbel lies south of Aswan, Karnak Temple Complex and Valley of the Kings near Luxor. The capital city of Cairo boasts the Egyptian Museum and the Muhammad Ali Mosque.
Giza: 20 km southwest of Cairo, the place with the oldest and most impressive monuments of the ancient world. There is a complex of ancient royal burial grounds and sacred buildings such as the Great Sphinx and Great Pyramid. There are however many other pyramids and temples.
Saqqara: approximately 30 km south of Cairo is a vast ancient burial ground which served as the final resting place for residents Mennoferu, the capital of the Old Kingdom. There are numerous pyramids, including the Step Pyramid of Djoser, a large number of mastabas.
Luxor: approximately 500 km south of Cairo, the place where previously there were ancient Egyptian capital of Thebes. This place is sometimes referred to as "the world's largest museum under the open sky." There are remains of temples of Luxor and Karnak. On the west bank of the Nile is more temples, monuments and the Theban necropolis, which includes the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens.
Abu Simbel: approximately 850 km south of Cairo, near the Sudanese border, is an archaeological site with two rock temples that were carved into hillside rocks during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II. (13th century BC). This complex was completely moved in 1960 to prevent flooding in the formation of Lake Nasser.
Alexandria: summer capital, mainly because of the beaches, ancient history and the Bibliotheca Alexandrina.
Sinai: Sinai has become a popular tourist destination due to its natural environment, rich coral reefs, and biblical history. The most popular places of the peninsula are Mount Sinai (Jabal Musa) and St. Catherine's Monastery, which is considered to be the oldest working Christian monastery in the world. Another attraction of the seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, Dahab, Nuweiba and Taba.
